Rogue Dungeon: Through the Ages

✨ The Making of Rogue Dungeon ✨
Before we look ahead to the next great chapter, we wanted to take a moment to share where it all began. From rough sketches to handmade prototypes cobbled together, Rogue Dungeon has traveled a long and winding road.
Join us on a little journey through the early concept art, first playtests, and evolving visions that shaped Rogue Dungeon. It’s a walk through the ages — and a reminder that every legend begins with a single step.
First Concept
In the earliest days, before the world of Rogue Dungeon had a name, there were simple sketches — crude diagrams born in the humble halls of Microsoft Paint.
Hero Mat
The Player Mat was stark and bare, with no notion yet of skills or talents. Only the will to survive was drawn.
Dungeon Mat
The Dungeon Mat was a wild frontier: no battleground, no mini-map, just a single towering deck where stairways might emerge without warning, thrusting the brave ever deeper into unknown peril.
The First Playable Prototype
The first true artifact of Rogue Dungeon was assembled from poster board — a relic of mismatched cards, each one a different size and hue.
The colors were not to endure, but the spirit of the game shone through. Some cards bore rough sketches, scratched in haste but full of heart.
Playtesting was a festival:
Taking turns, sharing laughter, trading tales over bottles of beer. Good times — and vital lessons.

Monsters
Behold the monstrous terrors... lovingly crafted! Now that's quality, I tell you what!
Bosses
(Not a Cerberus among them — an oversight worthy of a heretic's trial.)
Rooms
Many early room designs survived into the final game, though some were rebalanced or redesigned along the way.
(Tip: Right-click and "Open Image in New Tab" to zoom in.)
Loot
The early loot system was far simpler: a single "Weapon Upgrade" card represented all weapon improvements.

Heroes
All the heroes you know from the 2nd Edition were already in place — even then
2nd Homemade Prototype
This version got a big upgrade! We introduced some early graphic design elements, printing color cards on cardstock late one evening at FedEx Office.
We used a professional-grade paper cutter — the kind that could take a finger clean off!
We actually made multiple versions: one using mostly Google Images, and another built mostly from our own original art. (I haven’t found all my copies yet, but they’re around here somewhere.)
3rd Homemade Prototype
Hero Mat
Designed to look like warm, living wood — perfect for the player’s organic connection to their character.
Dungeon Mat
Cold, lifeless stone — capturing the harsh, dangerous world below.
The First Production — Quality Prototype
At last, the game took on the form of a true artifact.
Later economics demanded hard choices: no mingling of square and tarot-sized cards, a box longer and thinner than the final design.
But the soul of Rogue Dungeon was now unmistakable.
1st Edition — Game Crafter
2nd Edition — Kickstarter
Dungeon Dive
Fun fact:
Rogue Dungeon was originally called Dungeon Dive!
Miscellaneous Concept Art
✨ The Tale Continues... ✨
Rogue Dungeon was only the beginning. Now a new saga rises — A Rogue’s Tale.
The maps are drawn, the world is set, but its greatest stories are still unwritten.
It is you — the brave, the cunning, the reckless — who will bring this world to life.
With every choice you make, with every risk you dare, you will help carve this chapter into legend.
From the depths of our hearts: thank you for joining us.
The adventure ahead is not ours alone — it belongs to all of us now.

New add-on for upgraded base-game boards!

– Sun, Apr 27, 2025 at 07:39:03 PM
After we hit the stretch goal of dual-layer boards for all expansion boards. Backers have requested we provide a way to upgrade all four game boards from the base game as well.
So we added a new add-on called "Upgraded Base Boards". With this add-on, we would include in your reward dual-layer boards for the dungeon and 3 player boards for the base-game.
Here are instructions from Charles on how to do this if you have already backed.
When you click on "Manage your pledge" and then "Change your pledge", there are a total of 3 screens to go through. One is selecting your reward level, the second is selecting add-ons, and the third is confirming your changes. There are two ways to get to that second screen. One is to re-select your current reward level. The other is to click "Continue to payment" and then navigate back to the second page, either by clicking "Add-ons" at the top, or the "Edit" button.

Congrats on hitting the $100K stretch goal!

Wow, you guys have exceeded our backing expectations. We are very grateful to have such a devoted following. So, we want to make the game extra fancy.
We will be upgrading all the boards for new content to double layer boards. So the dungeon and player boards for the Sewer and Castles expansions will have an extra layer. This would allow us to have slots for the tokens and cards. We will take care to make sure there's enough room to pick up the components (also accounting for card sleeves) once they are in the slots. We will not be upgrading, reprinting and including all the boards for the base game; this KS is about the expansions and this would also be cost prohibitive.
For the campaign map board, we think it would be cool to have 3 layers if we can for various terrain hexes. So like craters, ocean, river, swamp and sewer hexes on the lowest layer. Then cites, towns, villages, plains, forest and hills on the middle layer. Mountains and possibly the border and castles on the highest layer. These details will be TBD.
We thank you for all the support!
